You can create a symbol from any object, text, or group. Symbols can include other symbols.
To create a new symbol:
1 | Choose Insert > New Symbol. |
The Symbol Properties dialog box opens. | |
2 | In the Name text box, type a name for the symbol. |
3 | Choose a symbol type, either Graphic or Button, and click OK. |
The Symbol Editor or Button Editor opens. | |
4 | Create the object to be used as a symbol and close the editor. |
The symbol appears in the Library and in the document. | |

To turn one or more selected objects into a symbol:
1 | Choose Insert > Convert to Symbol. |
The Symbol Properties dialog box opens. | |
2 | In the Name text box, type a name for the symbol. |
3 | Choose a symbol type, either Graphic or Button, and click OK. |
The selected object becomes a symbol and the symbol appears in the Library. | |
